    dominic_higueraOn a Summer afternoon I had the opportunity to sit down with a man that has been changing San Luis Obispo and educating students at Cal Poly since his arrival. In my previous interviews, one man kept coming up as a person that had a story that would be great material for this series. The following account of our interview is the summation of the longest interview that I have ever conducted and the lessons that were laced throughout the interview, as to be expected from a long time professor.

    In 1952 a young man came to San Luis Obispo with his wife and two children to pursue a new career as a professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Ken Schwartz and his family were leaving a much larger Los Angeles to try the small town life. In his words there was some hesitation about moving to a town of only 14,000 residents, “It was a big step down from LA but we thought we would give it a try.”   Read More

    Go a step further and promote your business in our the Halloween Costume Contest! Donate a prize that will go to the winners of each age group (0 – 2, 3 – 4, 5 – 8, 9 – 12, pairs & groups). Your business will be recognized on the Trick-or-Treat map, as well as by our emcee during the contest!

    We currently have four more sponsorship opportunities available  for our Holiday Parade.  Our procession is the county’s most popular event attracting thousands to Downtown SLO.  Sponsors receive recognition at all announcer stations throughout the parade route and free entry into the parade.  Sponsors’ logos are placed on all print media including Holiday posters, flyers and advertisements as well as in the Downtown Association’s social media platforms, website and weekly newsletters.

Great American Main Street Award Winner

Old SLO Trolley

Trolley service is provided from both of the parking structures and at convenient locations within the Downtown core approximately every 15 minutes. The fare is 50 cents. Hours of operation are:

  • Thursdays - 5 PM to 9 PM - Year Round
  • Fridays - 5 PM to 9 PM - June-Labor Day
  • Saturday - 5 PM to 9 PM - April - October
