Downtown News

  • What’s Happening Around Downtown in September?

flag_in_mission_plazaI remember the morning of September 11th, 2001 just as clearly as it was yesterday and not 14 years ago. At that point I was preparing for a world history class with the news announcements stating that two commercial jet liners had collided with the World Trade Center, then two more jets crashed. It was immediately clear that our country was under attack and the raw emotion of seeing the footage looped repeatedly over the television is something that I will never forget. Nor will I forget the sadness, anger and extreme patriotism I felt, all at the same time. Those recollections and emotions are shared by many of us and are undoubtedly much stronger for people more immediately affected by the tragedy than by a small town kid from across the country, yet this event was so significant that it affected people from around the world.  Read More

  • Notice to Businesses: EPS Regulation

SLOSP_PolystyreneIn June, the San Luis Obispo City Council approved an ordinance to regulate the use and sale of expanded polystrene (also called EPS or white plastic foam) food containers and  products. The ordinance will help protect the city’s natural environment and decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills.  The ordinance will become effective January 1, 2016.

The ordinance requires restaurants and food providers to use recyclable, compostable or biodegradable products instead of EPS containers.  It also prohibits grocery stores and retailers from using disposable foam coolers, cups, plates, bowls and packaging peanuts. There are exemptions for certain products.  For more information and to learn more about the regulation, please click here or stop by our office at 1108 Garden Street, Suite 210.

Also, food providers have the ability to apply for a one time, one year exemption from the ordinance if alternative products are unaffordable or unavailable.  To apply for this you must submit a form by November 1, 2015. Exemption forms are available at www.slocity.org/eps.
